MVV Energie AG: a regional energy supplier with vision
MVV Energie AG can look back on a long history as a local supplier of energy, district heating and water to the City of Mannheim. The company has been publicly listed since 1999. The City of Mannheim was thus one of the first municipalities to recognise the signs of the times and to grant its municipal utility company greater freedoms with a new legal form. MVV Energie has become the nerve centre and core of a municipal utility group across the whole of Germany.
Notwithstanding its massive expansion, MVV Energie has remained true to its origins as a company. As its majority shareholder, the City of Mannheim guarantees the company’s stability and ensures that the relationship remain close between the local utility company and the people who live in the city. The quality of this relationship far exceeds the usual dealings between supplier and customer. Around 1,800 employees of MVV Energie live and work in the region. This makes the company a fixed component of the city’s culture. The company also provides support in numerous areas - sport, cultural, social and charitable activities benefit from this close relationship.
It goes without saying that we also feel responsible for the environment in which we live and work. Efficiency therefore plays a key role in the generation and distribution of electricity, gas, water and district heating. For nearly 50 years now, for example, we have supplied inner-city Mannheim with district heating generated by means of cogeneration at Grosskraftwerk Mannheim, our large power plant in the city. Our biomass power plant and our waste incineration activities on Friesenheim Island make a major contribution towards generating electricity in environmentally-friendly ways. And our water, which is drawn from three well systems around the city, is of superb quality – proof of the care we apply in our water extraction and distribution activities.
