Environmental Commitment

Reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions is of critical importance to the protection of the environment. That is why we are investing in the development and use of decentralised energy generation based on the most up-to-date technology. Merely by operating our three biomass power plants in Mannheim, Königs Wusterhausen and Flörsheim-Wicker we have achieved an annual reduction of 300,000 tonnes in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

We also contribute to the protection of the environment by providing heating to around 84 percent of private households in Mannheim via conducted energy (district heating and gas). Furthermore, our CO2 emissions have been reduced considerably by means of our environmentally-friendly generation of district heating on the basis of co-generation.

Our in-house environmental experts oversee the implementation of our stringent environmental standards. The main responsibilities of these company representatives for clean air, emergency response, water protection, waste and the transport of hazardous goods involve informing and training employees and facility managers, proposing improvements and supervising compliance with legal requirements.

We protect the air in Mannheim

MVV makes a large contribution to the quality of the air in Mannheim. The conducted supply with gas, district heating and electricity means that 86% of households do not need to use heating oil. That alone results in 21% less CO2, 42% less SO2, 20% less NO2 and 1.0 % less dust being emitted into the air.

Regulations and standards are now in place across Europe in order to limit the emission of harmful substances into the air by the incineration of waste. The combined heat and power station of MVV Energie AG on Friesenheim Island does not only comply with these regulations - its practical operations even fall considerably short of the strict limits set for all harmful substances parameters.

If waste is used to generate energy, as is the case at the MVV facility, rather than being disposed, this energy does not have to be generated from fossil fuels. This results in a reduction of around 75% in the level of greenhouse gases released.

We ensure that tap water is of the highest quality

You can be certain that only drinking water of the highest quality flows from Mannheim's taps. Regular water analyses confirm that our tap water is a good deal better than required.
